Number 47: Common Responses

Hello everyone!

Let’s have a look at some common responses in English.

For example, how would you respond when someone says:

                             Nice to meet you.

Would you say:

a)      me too

b)      Nice to meet you too

c)       Yes, isn’t it?

I hope you chose option b)  – that is the best way to respond in this case.

Now, try out my Quizlet set and learn some other common responses:

How does it work?

Click on the flashcard to see the correct expression on the other side. When you have spent some time learning the responses, choose a study mode at the bottom right for more fun learning options – “scatter” is my personal favourite!

Have fun!

All the best for now,

Derek

Number 46: Useful phrases for negotiations

Hello everyone!

Let’s look at some alternatives to using the word “if” when negotiating.

Using if:

We would agree to a 5% discount if you increase your order to 5,000 pieces.

Alternatives:

We would agree to a 5% discount provided you increase your order to 5,000 pieces.

We would agree to a 5% discount on condition that you increase your order to 5,000 pieces.

I’m afraid we can’t offer you a 5% discount unless you increase your order to 5,000 pieces.

I hope you found this useful.

All the best,

Derek

Number 43: Make or Do?

Hello everybody!

I hope life is treating you well! I haven’t posted anything since the end of March due to illness, a trip to Ireland, and a lot of work!

Anyway, I’m back now and I want to look at an area which a lot of people have difficulty with – make and do.

When do we say make? When do we say do?

There is a general rule that we use make for things we do with our hands – make a cake

and that we use do for other actions – do the shopping

However, there are far too many exceptions to this rule, so it’s best to learn fixed expressions which are often used.

Why not test your knowledge of some of these fixed expressions in my make or do quiz? I’m sure you’ll know some of these.

Have a look at this link for more fixed expressions with make and do.

Have a great weekend,

Derek
